This is literally more of the White House than I have ever seen. This turkey is a hero for transparency. Maybe they can set him free to look in on the health care negotiations?

This is just about as funny as a the White House can get without getting weird. So, it’s not really that funny, but applaud the effort.

If there are any sports fan readers of this blog, you may have noticed that Deadspin published a mostly fabricated story about a baseball college coach, as part of a new feature tweaking the coaches that have made their players’ or fans’ lives miserable. Deadspin ran an e-mail verbatim without any vetting (post has subsequently been taken down) from someone who claimed a coach physically threatened to beat him like a red-headed stepchild (HEY!) at a charity event. Deadspin took the post down, posted an apologia and then followed up it with a site explanation with the title: “And This Is What Happens When The Truth Is Untrue.”

As a former journalist, I think the above is dangerous and damaging. Running unconfirmed, career-ruining articles just for catharsis and page views is an incredibly childish way to run a business. That Deadspin apologized in multiple posts and promised to use anonymity for the subjects in the future makes clear how seriously the site takes its egregious mistake.

BUT! Marvel at some of the comments that lambaste those who would point out why what Deadspin did was bad! E.g.

For those of you who have been reading this site for less than 3 weeks, do we HAVE to remind you sanctimonious assholes that Nick Denton — you know who he is, right? — expressly stated that he wanted his properties to take more of a TMZ style approach: break news first, fix it later.

You may not like it, but if you are unaware of the mission of this site (as expressed by its publisher) then I suggest you keep it the fuck down.

Why do all the critics always assume that being a respected journalistic institution is what Deadspin is aiming for? It’s not. And frankly, despite all the bitching from some commenters, it’s pretty much exactly the same as when Leitch ran it.

Deadspin amended the story, that’s as far as they needed to go. If they want to send Murphy a personal message apologizing to him, that’s cool. They don’t owe readers an apology for posting something that ends up being incorrect. That’s asinine. It’s a blog that makes no bones about their purpose: laughs. That’s it, they don’t claim everything they write is 100% factual. If you want that, go to espn.com.

Are you related to Murphy in any way? Did the story affect your life in any way? Or are you just feigning outrage because it seems like the right thing to do? I can’t stand people who do that shit, and it appears it’s a growing epidemic around here.

Apparently we’re well into the age where people do not care about truth or fairness or not taking a second to check to make sure you are completely ruining someone’s life JUST for the LOLs. It’s sad, but it’s true.
